Serving is central to working at the U.S. Center for SafeSport, an independent nonprofit with the mission to make athlete well-being the centerpiece of our nation’s sport culture through abuse prevention, education, and accountability.
Every day, SafeSport staff support athletes, working to end sexual, physical, and emotional abuse in U.S. Olympic and Paralympic sport. From developing abuse prevention resources to conducting event audits to resolving cases of misconduct and abuse, we’re building the foundation for athletes to have a safer experience at every level.
Last week, to kick off the annual in-person meetings, SafeSport staff served in a different way by spending an afternoon supporting local organizations across the Denver metro area through a series of community service events.
Staff headed out into the field to organize sports equipment, clean up athletic fields, assemble medical supply kits, and help foster safer, cleaner, and more welcoming spaces for our community members. SafeSport staff also had the chance to serve in local athletic, recreation, and community spaces that support children, health, sport, and community well-being.
Standing with a shovel in her hand and a bucket of weeds at her feet, Paralympian April Holmes, interim CEO of the U.S. Center for SafeSport, spoke to the importance of all the ways in which SafeSport serves athletes and communities. “You name it, we’re doing it. This is our way of giving back to the community.”
