As an athlete, performing your best takes more than practice and skill. It takes a safe, welcoming environment where athletes are empowered to test their limits and give their all. By being supported, athletes can truly thrive in sport.

At the U.S. Center for SafeSport, we believe a safer sport culture is rooted in care, accountability, and safeguarding at every level of play. This International Safe Sport Day, we asked SafeSport Athlete Advisory Team (SAAT) members to share how safe sport can support athlete well-being and help them succeed.

Explore their responses below and watch the videos to hear from each athlete firsthand.

2026 SafeSport Day

Hear from our SAAT members Lainee Jones and John Klatt as they discuss the importance of safe sport and abuse prevention education.

We Asked:

“What Responsibility Do Athletes Have in Creating a Safe Sport Culture for Others?”

“When it comes to creating a safe sport culture for your team… I want athletes to know that their voice matters the most, and they should feel empowered to use that voice and speak out against any inappropriate behavior they may see.”

“What Is the One Thing You Want Every Athlete, Coach, and Parent to Understand About Safe Sport?”

“The U.S. Center for SafeSport has educational materials that are specifically designed for parents and guardians. If you visit the U.S. Center for SafeSport website and click on the education tab, you’ll find resources that help you understand what makes relationships between coaches and athletes healthy.”
