The SafeSport Athlete Advisory Team (SAAT) is composed of a diverse group of adult athletes who are committed to utilizing their unique perspectives to support U.S. Center for SafeSport (the Center) efforts to make athlete well-being the centerpiece of our nation’s sports culture through abuse prevention and accountability. The SAAT’s mission is to ensure athlete voices are included and elevated throughout Center-led initiatives and within the sport community.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide thoughtful and candid feedback on Center initiatives and processes from an athlete’s viewpoint
  • Support the development of relationships with athletes, media, sports networks, and other stakeholders within the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Movement and beyond
  • Assist in outreach to athletes regarding the Center’s abuse prevention efforts
  • Maintain open communication with Center staff and fellow SAAT members, including informal check-ins and participation in events or activities

COMMITMENT

  • Serve a two-year term (renewable up to two additional terms)
  • Attend and actively participate in at least 3 of 4 quarterly meetings
  • Be available to other SAAT members and Center staff for additional meetings on an ad-hoc basis
  • Actively participate in providing feedback on the Center’s projects and processes
  • Assist the Center in better communicating with athlete communities by helping to craft messages, identify networks or publications, and facilitate relevant introductions
  • The overall time commitment is estimated at 2-4 hours per month in addition to one full-day in-person meeting per year, and associated travel time

  • Help make sport culture safer by advancing the Center’s work to end abuse
  • Expenses associated with SAAT participation, such as travel and accommodations, will be covered by the Center

QUALIFICATIONS

  • SAAT members must be at least 18 years old
  • Athlete members should fall under one of the following categories and are not required to be associated with the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Movement:
    • Team USA Athlete’s Commission (formerly Athlete Advisory Council (AAC)
    • Local and regional athletes (competitive sport participation that is not paid and does not fall under elite or Olympic or Paralympic participation)
    • Adaptive athletes
    • United States Olympians and Paralympians Association (USOPA)
    • Professional athletes
    • Collegiate athletes (current or active within the last five years)
    • Athletes at large
  • SAAT members should also have the following:
    • A high degree of professional ethics and integrity
    • Sensitivity to and an understanding of the many experiences and expressions of trauma caused by sexual violence and harassment

RECRUITMENT PROCESS

  • Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee, which consists of up to four volunteer SAAT members and two Center staff
  • Finalists in the review process will be interviewed and ranked based on the strength of their application and interview
  • Open seats will be filled by the end of the calendar year

The SafeSport® Athlete Advisory Team (SAAT) members are independent, non-employee advisors to the United States Center for SafeSport (the Center). Any instances of alleged abuse or misconduct should be reported directly to the Center.
