RESOLVING REPORTS FAIRLY

When a report of abuse or misconduct is submitted to the U.S. Center for SafeSport—either through this form or by phone at 833-5US-SAFE (587-7233)—the Center initiates a series of steps to fairly and efficiently assess and resolve the issue.

Our Process By Individual

The Claimant

The person alleged to have experienced abuse or misconduct constituting a violation of the SafeSport Code.

The Respondent

The person who is alleged to have violated the SafeSport Code.

The Witness

The person identified as an individual who may have witnessed reported misconduct or abuse.

THE THREE MAIN STAGES, AND QUESTIONS WE ADDRESS AT EACH STAGE, ARE LISTED BELOW​

The Center employs Process Navigators to answer questions for Claimants, Respondents, and third parties on the response and resolution process.

1. REPORTING AND INTAKE
• Is the Center the appropriate jurisdiction for the investigation of the report?
• (If so) Does the Center have the information needed to begin an investigation?
• Should Temporary Measures be imposed before a comprehensive investigation is completed?
2. INVESTIGATION
• What evidence can be obtained, or interviews conducted, to help assess the report?
• Is it more likely than not (the preponderance of evidence standard) that the abuse or misconduct occurred?
3. RESOLUTION
• Did the conduct violate the SafeSport Code, and if so what sanctions are appropriate?
• Has the Respondent, Claimant, and relevant NGB been properly informed of the decision?
• Are Respondents notified of their rights and process for arbitration? (The video below outlines Center arbitrations)
• Have sanctions been recorded, if appropriate, in the Center’s public Centralized Disciplinary Database?

ABOUT ARBITRATIONS IN CENTER CASES

The U.S. Center for SafeSport recognizes the right of respondents to resolve disagreements with a Center decision or notice of temporary measures through private, independent arbitration. This video outlines that process.
